Why Kung Fu Panda is Wrong (and a Few Random Thoughts About the Coronavirus)

We are noodle-folk. Broth runs deep in our veins. Oh, and by the way, I am ABSOLUTELY 100% SURE that I am NOT omniscient (Take that, nihilists and relativists).

Why am I, an adult, writing a post about Kung Fu Panda, a children’s movie over a decade old? Well, as it is a children’s movie, I think the messages it sends are important to consider. Don’t get me wrong. I love the movie. It’s great fun. I just take issue with the final message of the Dragon Scroll. The Dragon Scroll is blank, there is no secret ingredient. This is basically a nihilistic message. There is no meaning of life. There is no truth. Etc… I have to say, of all positions someone can take, that one irks me more than any other. It may sound like a platitude, and maybe I’m not the best person to promulgate this point, but how about positing Love as the answer. Yeah, great: like that hasn’t been tried before. Okay, Love has a little sister and she’s called Trust. We won’t get through this pandemic without either one. Lack of trust is probably one of our biggest problems. Not that it hasn’t developed without good cause. Someone hacks you computer. You buy an antivirus program because you no longer trust others on the Internet. Someone breaks into your home; you buy an alarm system and once more your trust in others disintegrates a little bit more. Writ on the large scale; consider the political divisions of the world. China experiences a viral outbreak and doesn’t ask for aid from the U.S. Why? Because they don’t trust us, and we don’t trust them. It’s a little bit more complicated than that; they’ve wronged us, I’m sure, and their own people, but we aren’t perfect either. And when a pandemic breaks out, it is lack of trust between nations that is hindering a more effective response. As Reagan suggested, perhaps it would be best if both/all parties practiced trust but verify. Finally, when the coronavirus is done I would like to point out to our world leaders that the coronavirus has something close to a 1% kill rate. Could you imagine what would happen if that rate were higher like 5% or 10%? With that in mind, please agree to destroy your stockpiles of biological weapons, which I’m sure many of you have (or am I the one who isn’t trusting now?).

Anyway, I got a bit off track of the original point of this post. Kung Fu Panda is wrong to brainwash our children into thinking there is no answer, there is no truth, there is no meaning, and all you have to do is believe in something to make it special. I think that’s a terrible message to send to children.

The Idea Box, part II

Due to the fact that I have the business acumen of a stone, but I occasionally have, what I think are, good ideas, I’m going to continue sharing these ideas with the world via the Internet. So, welcome to the Idea Box, part II

1. Independence Unlimited—this is another business idea. I live in a middle class neighborhood. I have a large house with a reasonable backyard. I’ve often wondered what it would take to turn my backyard and home into a more-or-less self-sufficient abode. Independence Unlimited is the name of my imaginary business that would come out to my house and give me pointers on what I could do to achieve that goal and maybe sell me some equipment. Please note that whatever equipment I was to buy would have to be something Simpletech-friendly (see previous post “The Idea Box”). That is, mostly manually functioning things and the simpler, the better. For example, for water supplies you could collect rainwater off the roof by simply positioning a barrel under each drainage gutter. However, I don’t think I would drink such water (as it would likely collect who-knows-what running over tarred shingles or what-have-you), but I would have no problem washing my clothes with it, or maybe even watering a garden with it. If we explore this idea further, we have to figure out how a single house can produce its own needs like: food, water, heat, shelter (automatically done), and maybe some limited amount of power. With respect to food; is it possible to grow enough of your own food in your own backyard, to take care of yourself and your family? With respect to water; rain water works, as do lakes and streams—but this is all non-purified sources. Heat can be produced with fire wood and a wood stove, or electrical power if you’ve got some source of electricity.
2. Rain Supplied Power—this is actually an invention instead of a business. Anyway, it occurred to me once, that it might be possible to harness the mechanical energy of rainwater that falls on a house. I have no idea if this would be quantitatively worthwhile. That is, you might just get energy sufficient to turn on a single light bulb for five minutes, if that, for all I know. Or it might actually help you run your household if you want to go off-grid and still use some power (see Independence Unlimited above). Anyway, my idea was to include one or several small water wheels in the vertical drainage gutters. Their presence would cause the water to back up some, so you would have to make the vertical drainage gutters larger than the horizonal ones. Also, filtering out leaves and other debris must be addressed. In the end, though, as I said, I don’t know if they would produce sufficient electricity to make it worthwhile.
3. The Problem with Electrical Power—I mentioned electrical power above, but with respect to it, I have some trepidation. Electricity is something I know very little about. I know it can kill or start a damaging fire, if misused. Still, I wonder if there is a way to harness electricity safely but in a way that is still simple to understand. That is, would it be simple enough for me to maintain and repair it as opposed to a trained electrician? Basically, can you harness electricity in a fashion compatible with the spirit of Simpletech or Independence Unlimited? I don’t know. And there are also regulations and code violations to consider.

The Coronavirus and Prayer: Part II

A few weeks back I announced here that, at the suggestion of a friend, I was going to start saying the Our Father everyday at 10:10 a.m. for the purpose of reducing the effects of the Coronavirus. I’ve been doing so fairly regularly. Over the last week or so, considering the current state of affairs of the coronavirus, I’ve increased my prayers to three times a day: 10:10a.m., 4:10a.m., and 10:10p.m. (all E.S.T in U.S.) I invite anyone else who wishes to join me to do so.

And as long as we are on the topic of religion and the coronavirus, I want to point out that I really don’t believe the coronavirus is a punishment sent by God (as I’m sure someone somewhere does) on us cursed sinners. On the contrary, I think it is a punishment/revenge thing sent by Satan, impersonating God, that Jesus is going to stop. However, as I am convinced I am the antichrist, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not believe me on anything unless you get some kind of communication from Jesus telling you that I’m correct. I am terribly afraid that, as the antichrist, I will unwittingly lead anyone who listens to me into utter disaster and ruin even though, as Satan’s final gambit, I am trying to thwart his plan and make it blow up in his face. But Satan is infinitely smarter and more powerful than I am so the possibility that he is using me in ways I do not understand is there. The best I can do is struggle on, regardless.
